Fight The Good Fight

Fight The Good Fight

1 Timothy 6:12
” Fight the good fight of faith…”

2 Timothy 2:3
” You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.”

The Christian life is not always rainbows and unicorns, but battles and warfare. There are battles to be fought, enemies to be overtaken and conquered, victories to be claimed and won. Of course, along the journey, there are wonderful feasts of restful seasons to be enjoyed, but the special business of the Christian Soldier is fighting. If we are to take heed to the text we have before us today, there are three things we must know. Who is our enemy? How do we fight them? What is the condition of our success?

I think the most powerful text in the entire Bible is Ephesians 6.

Ephesians 6:11-12 says,
” Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil, for we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of the age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

This text plainly states that the devil is our enemy. Our warfare is first and foremost a spiritual warfare and enemy number one is our adversary the devil.
1 Peter 5:8 says,
” Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

The world is the enemy of the Christian as well. The world has it’s own agenda, ambitions, idea’s and disposition; and these stand in direct contradiction and resistance to the mind of God. The world seeks to bring us under the dominion of it’s idea’s and proclivity, and it’s our business to resist, to fight, to overcome that which attempts to bring us into bondage.

1 John 5:4 says,
” For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith.”

A powerful testimony that the world is an enemy of the follower of Christ Jesus is James 4:4,
” Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”

Step back Christian! Separate yourself and be sanctified unto Christ Jesus your King! Apart FROM this world as you belong to the Kingdom of God!

The flesh is your enemy. We must daily sacrifice the flesh if we are to grow in the Spirit.
Paul writes in Romans 8:13,
” For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”

VS. 6-7 says,
” For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind (governed by the flesh) is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.”

Sin. Sin is an enemy that we must overcome daily in our lives, no matter the length of our stride in this race that we run, each one of us falls short of the glory of God. We all sin in some form or another. That’s why we have the merciful covering of the blood of our King Jesus Christ. We need not yield to it nor be overcome by it in any way for even a single moment. It’s going to happen; but when it does and we are knocked down, we should jump right back up with a renewed spirit of strength in the forgiveness found in Jesus Christ our Savior and a determination to conquer.

Romans 8:37 says,
“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors THROUGH Him who loved us.”

It is through Him, because of the sacrifice on the cross that day on Calvary that we can conquer sin. We are forgiven. We only but need to ask and believe. Yet it is not enough to fight sin in our own lives, but in the lives of others’ as well, for we were made to be warriors in the Army of Christ Jesus.

Today, as in the early church we contend with another enemy. False doctrine. The book of Jude, though short, addresses this issue and every Christian should read and take heed to its warnings. Some may think that false doctrine is not worth the fight but we must realize and understand that true doctrine is salvation and life and false doctrine is damnation and death. Too not fight false doctrine is to condone such, and to condone is to partake, and to partake is to share guilt and judgement therein.

So now we know what the fight is. How is it now that we fight? We must fight as did Eleazar in 2 Samuel 23:10, striking down the enemy even to the point of our hands’ grasp sticking to our swords. We must fight to win, with the knowledge that the breath within us is God given and can’t be taken without His permission. We have no right to expect defeat, but only to fight energetically with a mind of victory. We must not be an intermittent warrior, but persistent in the battle, as the warfare is never done until Jesus comes or God calls us home.

We must fight wisely. Wisdom in warfare is a surety to victory over our enemy and attained only through prayer.

James 1:5 says,
” If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

Much of our fighting must be done upon our knees.
If we are to be victorious in our battles, if we are too succeed, persevere and finish the race, there are conditions to the victory. First and foremost we MUST place our faith in our God and Savior Jesus Christ.

1 John 5:4-5 says,
“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”

It is by and through our faith in Him that we can walk the edge of this world and not fall. And in Him we must be strong. It is through the strength and might we find in Him that we are able to stand.

Ephesians 6:10 says,
” Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.”
Ephesians 3:16 says,
“…that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man,”
It is because of our faith that we receive strength and because we receive strength that we are able to “endure hardness” or ” suffer hardship”.

2 Timothy 2:3 says,
” You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.”

To adequately fight, we must posses and have knowledge of our weapons and what the best weapons of our warfare are; and the greatest weapon of our warfare is the Word of God.
Hebrews 4:12 says,
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

Take heed Christian Soldier, put on the whole armor of God; make ready for war and prepare yourself for battle. Enter into the front line warfare; carry the weak, seek the weary and for them stand strong. Tearfully pray for the broken and lost; hear the words of the Apostle Paul and ” Stand therefore…..”
Amen
