What is it to walk with God?
To walk with God means that we are daily living to seek full consciousness of His magnificent presence and have a conscious communion with Him in every thought and action; letting Him go before us in all things, deeds and thoughts, and trusting every step to His promises given in His word. To walk with God is to have the understanding that “God is beside me” is our victory proclamation as we speak with Him and listen for Him to speak with us. It is to live in the real conscious companionship of our Lord, our King, our God.
The result of walking with the Lord is great and abounding joy. Psalm 5:11 says, “But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; let those also who love Your name be joyful in You.” We know that we are not alone, as He is by our side in all we do. In the loneliest hours of Jesus’ life He told His disciples in John 16:32, ” Indeed, the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I AM NOT ALONE, BECAUSE THE FATHER IS WITH ME.” He is with us even in our darkest and loneliest hours, and in that time brings us an abiding peace.
Psalm 16:8 says,
” I have set the Lord always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.”
vs. 11 says,
” You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
Walking with God will bring around an enlightenment of the spirit by the Spirit, unreachable through philosophy and scholarship; attained only by communion of mindful thoughts of the Almighty and meditation on His ways. Nothing is more cleansing to the spirit, nothing more purifying of the heart and life, as the conscious presence of the Holy Spirit. Because we become more like those with whom we consistently associate, in walking with God a beauty of character is built that is unmatched in anything this world has to offer.
If we are to enter into a walk with God that will overpower, overwhelm, overtake, completely consume and ultimately guide our lives into His eternal presence, we must first trust in the atoning blood of His Son Jesus Christ. God is a just a holy God, and we are all sinners, despite how “good” we may think we are. Sin separates us like a deep and impassable crevasse between us and Him. We are unable to walk with Him until this sin is put away….and it is the blood that puts away the sin.
Hebrews 9:22 says,
” And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.”
So by the shedding of the blood of Jesus Christ as the final sacrifice, the Lamb of God, upon the cross, there is remission of sins for all that believe.
If we would walk with God, we must also obey God. Jesus says in
” But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord’ , and not do the things which I say?”
John 14:23 says,
Jesus answered and said to him, ” If anyone loves me, he will keep My words; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.”
If we would walk with God, we must actively pursue Him; plant, fertilize, breed, mature, nourish and cultivate the thought of His presence. We must seek His face in all that we do, and in doing so, He will make His home with us.
